I saw the VAME show advertised a couple of years ago and decided to go along. I had a small collection of miniatures which had been accumulating since childhood and I always enjoyed looking at dolls and dollhouses.

Well, the show had a number of traders selling all kinds of wonderful things: There were dollhouses and dolls of course, and furniture, wallpapers and lighting systems. And there were so many delightful tiny treasures - many of which were handcrafted by miniaturists right here in Australia.

A large area of the hall contained displays of miniature scenes and themed vignettes put together by miniature clubs and individuals from around Victoria. Most scenes contained a mixture of purchased miniatures and others handcrafted by the people who assembled the scenes. The thought of making my own miniatures appealed to me, so I inquired about membership. I was introduced to a club in my local area and I went along to my first monthly meeting where we made a tiny leather bound book. I was hooked.

Even before joining VAME I had toyed with the idea of buying a dollhouse. But when I really thought about it, filling an entire dollhouse with miniatures seemed an expensive and daunting exercise. VAME introduced me to the concept of room boxes or vignettes. Putting together a scene is fun. I joined in the annual VAME weekend retreat and made a miniature pantry. Fantastic. Then I created a scene as part of my club's miniature for theVAME show. Now I'm making a shop and I've got a dozen ideas for other scenes. I've also got a much bigger miniature collection thanks to all the workshops I attended.

And I've got some great new friends, too. What a bonus! - by Stacey
